30 Arrested in Philippines e-Sabong Crackdown
Authorities in the Philippines have arrested 30 individuals during a raid on a suspected illegal online cockfighting operation in Talisay City, Negros Occidental. The enforcement action followed allegations that the activity was linked to gambling figure Atong Ang, who remains at large.
The operation took place early on 23 April in Sitio Catamnan 2, Barangay Concepcion, after local officials received information pointing to an ongoing e-sabong setup. City Mayor Rowena Lizares said the raid was carried out to dismantle the operation, which was believed to involve both local and non-local participants. Among those detained, only a small number were residents of the area, while one individual was identified as a minor.
During the raid, authorities confiscated a range of equipment allegedly used to facilitate the activity. This included nearly 300 fighting roosters, cockfighting gaffs, and multiple electronic devices such as computers, mobile phones, cameras, routers and satellite receivers. Investigators said the setup was used to livestream cockfights, allowing remote betting through online platforms.
Officials noted that the facility appeared to have been designed to conceal its true purpose, with elements suggesting it was set up to mimic operations in other countries while remaining hidden from public view.
The operation was conducted by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group alongside other law enforcement units as part of a broader campaign targeting illegal gambling. It lasted several hours and focused on shutting down the site and securing evidence.
All suspects are expected to face charges under laws covering illegal gambling and cybercrime. Authorities confirmed that the individuals are currently in custody while documentation and legal proceedings are being prepared.
The case forms part of wider efforts to address illegal gambling activities conducted through digital platforms, particularly those involving online streaming and remote wagering systems.
