Bangladesh Plans Nationwide Gambling Crackdown
The government of Bangladesh is preparing to launch a nationwide crackdown on gambling and online betting, with enforcement expected to intensify following the conclusion of parliament’s session on April 30. Authorities have signalled a strict stance, emphasising a zero-tolerance approach.
Speaking on the issue, Salahuddin Ahmed said the government is committed to addressing gambling-related activity, particularly due to concerns over its impact on younger populations. The response follows comments from Zainul Abdin Farroque, who raised the issue in parliament.
Officials indicated that multiple law enforcement agencies will work together to carry out coordinated operations. The effort is expected to target illegal gambling while also addressing links to other criminal activities, including drug-related offences.
Gambling remains largely prohibited under the Public Gambling Act of 1867, leaving online betting in a loosely regulated environment. Although the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025 introduced penalties for operating or promoting online gambling including prison sentences and fines authorities believe enforcement has not been sufficient to curb activity.
Financial networks linked to illegal betting are also under scrutiny. In 2025, the Criminal Investigation Department identified more than 1,000 financial agents suspected of facilitating gambling-related transactions, with the information shared with Bangladesh Bank. The current strategy is expected to include efforts to disrupt these funding channels.
The renewed focus comes amid broader economic pressures, with recent data showing slower growth compared to previous years. Authorities are therefore linking enforcement not only to legal concerns but also to financial stability and the movement of unregulated funds.
At the same time, neighbouring India is moving forward with its own regulatory measures. Enforcement of restrictions on online real-money gaming is set to begin from May 1 under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules 2025, overseen by the Online Gaming Authority.
With parliamentary proceedings concluding and enforcement measures being strengthened, Bangladesh is preparing for a more coordinated and extensive effort to tackle illegal gambling and associated financial activities.
