MLS Moves to Remove Card Betting Markets After Probe
Major League Soccer (MLS) has moved to tighten its approach to certain sports betting markets after the suspension of former Columbus Crew players Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah. The league has asked sportsbooks to remove wagering options related to yellow and red cards, citing integrity concerns linked to these types of bets.
The request follows an investigation into the conduct of the two players, which raised questions about potential manipulation involving specific in-game events.
Concerns Over Card Betting Markets
According to the league’s findings, Jones received a yellow card during a match in October 2024 while both players had placed bets related to the game, including a prediction that he would receive a caution.
Investigators said there was no evidence that either player attempted to influence the final result of the match. However, the inquiry determined that confidential information may have been shared with other bettors regarding intentions connected to receiving yellow cards during the game.
Officials concluded that the players likely communicated details to outside bettors about plans that could lead to cautions being issued. The situation has intensified concerns around wagers tied to individual moments within a match.
These types of bets often referred to as micro-markets or prop bets focus on specific incidents rather than overall outcomes, making them more vulnerable to potential manipulation.
Club Response to the Incident
Columbus Crew publicly criticised the behaviour of the two former players and reiterated its commitment to competitive integrity.
In a statement, the club said it strongly condemns any actions that conflict with the principles of fair competition, noting that such standards are essential for the team, the league and the sport as a whole.
League Maintains Broader Betting Strategy
Despite the controversy, MLS has indicated that it will continue supporting innovation and partnerships within the sports betting and prediction sectors.
Recently, the league entered into a marketing agreement with Polymarket, a platform operating in the prediction markets space.
Carter Ladd, Senior Vice President of Business Development at MLS, said the league aims to maintain a balanced approach that protects integrity while allowing clubs a degree of flexibility in commercial opportunities.
He explained that the organisation wants to avoid overly restrictive policies and instead support initiatives that could generate new revenue streams while maintaining appropriate safeguards.
Wider Debate Around Sports Betting Integrity
The incident has reignited broader discussions about the risks associated with certain betting markets in professional sports.
Other leagues have faced similar issues. In the National Basketball Association, cases involving players such as Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier have also raised concerns about gambling-related conduct.
At present, it remains unclear whether Jones or Yeboah could face criminal charges connected to the investigation.
Industry observers note that the situation highlights the growing challenges leagues face as sports betting continues to expand globally, particularly when it comes to protecting the integrity of competitions.
