Philippines, Singapore Boost Trade and AI Cooperation
The Philippines and Singapore are moving to deepen bilateral cooperation, with plans to strengthen ties in trade, investment, artificial intelligence and renewable energy. The initiative aims to stimulate business activity and create new employment opportunities for Filipinos.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. highlighted these developments following a Business and Innovation meeting at Malacañang Palace in Manila with Gan Kim Yong, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry.
Marcos described the discussions as productive, noting that both sides explored concrete areas where collaboration could deliver mutual benefits. He added that the meeting was focused not only on strengthening diplomatic ties but also on identifying practical opportunities for cooperation.
Focus on Regional Integration
The renewed partnership is also linked to broader regional goals within ASEAN. Marcos emphasized the importance of deeper economic integration across Southeast Asia as member states work toward greater competitiveness.
He noted that stronger ties with Singapore could enhance the Philippines’ economic standing while opening up new opportunities for its workforce. The collaboration is also expected to support the country’s readiness in emerging sectors such as AI and clean energy.
Contrasting Casino Landscapes
While the two countries are aligning more closely in trade and technology, their casino industries remain structured very differently.
In Singapore, the market operates under a tightly regulated duopoly, with only two integrated resorts: Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa. These properties function under strict government oversight.
By contrast, the Philippines has a more diverse casino landscape, featuring a wide range of venues from large-scale integrated resorts to smaller operations. The country also permits inland online gaming, making its regulatory approach notably different.
Broader Economic Alignment
Despite these differences in gaming frameworks, the current discussions between Manila and Singapore are centred on broader economic priorities. Both governments are focusing on strengthening trade relations, advancing cooperation in technology and promoting clean energy initiatives.
The renewed engagement reflects a shared objective to reinforce their positions within the region through collaboration in key growth sectors rather than convergence in their respective gaming industries.
