Dutch Lawmakers Target Illegal Gambling Measures

The issue was discussed during a three-hour parliamentary debate involving lawmakers from several political parties. The discussions covered the size of the black market, illegal gambling advertising and the minimum legal gambling age.

Justice Secretary KT van Bruggen said the government is currently developing legislation that would allow authorities to block illegal gambling websites through DNS blocking. The government also plans to gather public feedback on the proposal ahead of its potential implementation in 2027.

The debate comes after estimates from the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) indicated that fewer than 50% of gamblers have moved from illegal services to the regulated gambling market.

Illegal gambling advertising on social media emerged as another key issue during the discussions. Van Bruggen said that Meta and Google had indicated their willingness to cooperate with the government on the matter.

Lawmakers also raised the possibility of increasing the legal gambling age from 18 to 21, particularly in relation to high-risk gambling products such as online slot games.

Van Bruggen said the government would need to examine the proposed age limit before reaching a decision. The issue is expected to be addressed in future government progress reports.
