Grêmio Ends AlfaBet Sponsorship Signs Energia Bet Short-Term

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense has terminated its long-term master sponsorship with AlfaBet after the betting firm repeatedly failed to meet its payment obligations. In response, the Brazilian club has secured a short-term deal with Energia Bet, which will appear on the team’s jerseys for the final two rounds of the Brasileirão.

Why the Partnership Ended
AlfaBet, initially contracted to sponsor Grêmio until December 2027, missed three consecutive monthly payments September, October and November totaling over R$12 million. These delays disrupted the club’s finances, forcing temporary postponements of player salaries and prompting emergency loans from private backers. AlfaBet’s explanation cited internal corporate restructuring and temporary cash flow issues, promising to settle outstanding amounts only by January. The club decided that such instability was unacceptable for a multi-year partnership.

Short-Term Sponsorship Solution
To ensure continued sponsor visibility in the final matches, Grêmio moved quickly to sign a brief agreement with Energia Bet. The new sponsor will occupy the primary jersey space for the remaining games of the season, giving the club financial breathing room while avoiding gaps in its sponsorship presence.

Contractual and Financial Implications for AlfaBet
Under the terms of the original agreement, AlfaBet faces financial penalties including payment of all overdue installments and a proportional fine tied to the contract’s original duration. Depending on enforcement, this could result in a substantial financial liability for the betting company.

Wider Impact on Brazilian Football Sponsorships
While Grêmio acted decisively, fellow Serie A club Internacional also affected by delayed AlfaBet payments has yet to confirm its next steps. The incident underscores the fragility of the sports betting sponsorship market in Brazil, where regulatory shifts and rapid sector growth can create sudden financial pressures for clubs.

Grêmio’s priority now is financial stabilization and securing a reliable long-term sponsor. The emergency deal with Energia Bet provides temporary relief but highlights the importance of sponsorship reliability as betting partnerships continue to expand across Brazilian football.
