Kazakhstan Pilots Biometric ID Checks in Gambling Sector

Kazakhstan has launched a landmark pilot program introducing biometric identity checks in the gambling sector, signalling a major leap toward more secure and socially responsible gaming oversight. The initiative combines facial recognition technology with AI to enhance compliance, prevent fraud and protect vulnerable players.

Government-Backed Digital Oversight

Unveiled at the Digital Bridge forum, the project is being rolled out by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports in partnership with Biometric.Vision. The system will authenticate players in real time using facial biometrics, reducing the risk of underage participation, identity fraud and unauthorized play.

Officials emphasized that the technology will also flag suspicious behavior and identify self-excluded individuals attempting to gamble, marking a proactive approach to responsible gaming enforcement. If the pilot proves successful, biometric verification could become mandatory across online and land-based operators nationwide.

Baurzhan Rapikov from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports said the program represents “a new level in digitizing social services and reinforcing principles of transparency and social protection.” He noted that the system will serve as a modern tool to safeguard the public while supporting responsible industry growth.

Industry Impact and Compliance Shift

The pilot underscores Kazakhstan’s intention to modernize gambling controls by aligning them with broader national digital security strategies. For operators, the move may require new investments in biometric integrations for KYC, AML, and onboarding processes.

The initiative parallels similar advances in the country’s financial and fintech sectors, as Kazakhstan leans into digital governance and data-driven regulation.

Biometric.Vision CEO and founder Alibek Narimbaev highlighted the technology’s wider social role, stating it is designed to “solve critical social challenges and ensure fairness by allowing immediate verification and reducing risks in the gambling ecosystem.”

Regional Benchmark in the Making

Industry observers suggest Kazakhstan’s experiment could influence policy trends across Central Asia, providing a regulatory blueprint for integrating biometric technology into iGaming infrastructure. As identity tech becomes increasingly embedded in government-regulated systems, gambling may become one of the first industries to adopt biometric compliance at scale.

Kazakhstan’s forward-looking pilot indicates a broader push toward heightened oversight, technological integration and consumer protection in the evolving digital gambling landscape.
