NBA Restricts Player Prop Bets After Gambling Scandals
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has directed its authorised sportsbook partners to remove certain betting markets and limit player prop parlays for the current season, following gambling-related controversies involving Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier.
A league memo distributed to betting operators, including DraftKings and FanDuel, outlines the restrictions on wagers considered vulnerable to integrity concerns. Among the prohibited options are parlays combining under-statistics for the same player. Restrictions also cover bets on players winning the opening tip, missing a specific shot and athletes expected to spend fewer than 12 minutes on the court.
The NBA has additionally moved to limit certain higher-payout betting markets. Scott Kaufman-Ross, the league’s executive vice president, highlighted concerns surrounding these types of wagers and the potential to prevent illegal gambling through targeted restrictions.
The changes follow cases involving Porter and Rozier. According to the report, Porter appeared to leave games early deliberately, while Rozier has been charged in connection with alleged efforts to profit from betting. Rozier denies wrongdoing.
The league is also considering further measures to strengthen game integrity during the 2026-27 season.
However, enforcing similar restrictions across prediction markets presents a challenge for the NBA, as it does not have formal partnerships with those platforms. DraftKings and FanDuel have backed cooperation with the league, supporting efforts to safeguard the integrity of basketball and preserve a regulated sports betting environment.
