Peru Expands Responsible Gaming Training Efforts
Peru’s gambling sector is strengthening its focus on responsible gaming through structured training and awareness initiatives led by the Sociedad Nacional de Juegos de Azar (SONAJA). The programme aims to support prevention efforts and promote safer gambling environments across the country.
SONAJA has been delivering training sessions nationwide, targeting operators, staff and the wider public. These initiatives are designed to improve understanding of problem gambling and enhance early detection and prevention measures.
Rising Participation Levels
Engagement with the programme has increased in recent years. In 2024, a total of 562 participants completed the training, rising to 683 in 2025. This growth reflects expanding interest in responsible gaming education and broader industry involvement.
Looking ahead, SONAJA plans to extend its reach further, with additional sessions scheduled across Peru. These will be delivered in collaboration with the Ministerio de Comercio Exterior y Turismo (MINCETUR), highlighting coordination between the private sector and government bodies.
Responsible Gaming as a Key Focus
Fernando Calderón, President of SONAJA’s Board of Directors, emphasised that responsible gaming is central to the industry’s development. He noted that the organisation is focused on building sector-wide capabilities, reducing gambling-related risks and maintaining safe, regulated environments.
Regulatory Framework and Oversight
Calderón also pointed to Peru’s gambling sector as one of the most closely regulated industries in the country. Operators are required to comply with strict legal and fiscal obligations, with systems integrated into government oversight mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability.
Expansion of Training Initiatives
Following previous programmes, SONAJA is preparing to launch a new round of training sessions starting in April. These will be delivered both online and in person, with the aim of reaching a wider audience and continuing education efforts across the sector.
Economic Contribution
The gambling industry also plays a notable role in Peru’s economy. According to Calderón, it is subject to a dedicated tax of 12% on revenue, alongside additional fiscal contributions, underlining its financial importance to the country.
Overall, SONAJA’s initiatives demonstrate a continued effort to promote responsible gaming practices while supporting the sustainable development of Peru’s regulated gambling market.
