Argentina Reviews Tougher Online Betting Rules

Argentina’s Congress is preparing to examine a wide-ranging reform bill aimed at tightening oversight of online betting, with authorities increasingly treating gambling addiction as a public health issue. The proposal, introduced by President Javier Milei, arrives as online wagering continues to expand across the country through mobile apps and digital payment platforms.

Officials behind the initiative point to growing concern over youth gambling participation. Government figures cited alongside the bill show that more than one in four secondary school students admitted to gambling with real money during the past year, with online betting emerging as the most common format.

The proposal describes gambling addiction and excessive use of digital gaming platforms as modern social challenges that require stronger prevention, enforcement and awareness measures. A major focus of the bill is combating illegal gambling operations and limiting their reach.

Under the proposed framework, harsher penalties would apply to individuals operating unauthorized betting platforms, including prison sentences of up to six years. Businesses or individuals found supporting illegal operators through advertising, payment processing or technology services could also face significant fines.

Advertising rules would become stricter as well. Promotions for unlicensed gambling platforms would be banned across all forms of media, including social networks. Licensed operators would also face tighter controls, preventing gambling ads from targeting minors or presenting betting as a path to wealth, status or success. References linking gambling to alcohol or tobacco imagery would also be prohibited.

The bill also expands the responsibilities of public institutions. Telecommunications regulators would be expected to block illegal gambling websites, while Argentina’s central bank would work to stop financial transactions connected to unlicensed operators. Financial service providers would additionally be required to introduce stronger age-verification systems for gambling-related payments.

Public health agencies would play a central role in the wider strategy. The proposal includes educational campaigns in schools, public awareness initiatives and research programs tracking the development of gambling-related harm. Additional resources would also be directed toward treatment and support services.

Despite the national scope of the proposal, the bill does not seek to override Argentina’s provincial gambling framework. Instead, it aims to improve coordination between jurisdictions in response to the cross-border nature of online betting platforms, which often operate beyond local regulatory limits.

If approved, the reform would represent another significant step in Argentina’s evolving approach to online gambling regulation, with a particular emphasis on tackling illegal operators and strengthening protections for younger audiences.
