Betfred Pauses Ireland Operations Ahead of GRAI Rules
Betfred has informed customers in Ireland that it will temporarily suspend its services from June 30, coinciding with the introduction of the country’s new remote gambling licensing framework on July 1.
The operator has advised users to access their accounts and withdraw any remaining funds before the suspension takes effect. Once services are paused, customers will no longer be able to log in or place wagers.
In a communication to players, Betfred explained that the decision is linked to preparations for compliance with Ireland’s updated regulatory environment. The company described the withdrawal as temporary and stated that it intends to return to the market once the necessary requirements have been met.
The announcement has also prompted questions regarding outstanding ante-post bets. Betfred indicated that wagers already placed on the FIFA World Cup, which concludes on July 19, will be honoured. The operator said it will provide further information to affected customers regarding any open bets that remain active after the suspension date.
Customers were additionally advised not to place bets that are scheduled to settle after June 29, as the company finalises its exit ahead of the regulatory transition.
Ireland’s new gambling regime is now entering its final implementation phase. The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) began issuing licences earlier this year and will assume full oversight of the market as the framework takes effect.
Existing permissions for online operators expire on July 1, while land-based casino licences will remain valid until December 1, allowing for a phased transition into the new system.
Under the updated regulations, the GRAI has authority to investigate operators, impose financial sanctions and enforce compliance measures covering areas such as advertising, payment methods and reporting obligations.
The framework also includes a number of player protection measures. Individuals under the age of 18 are prohibited from gambling or working within the gambling industry, while spending controls linked to personal income have been introduced as part of broader efforts to reduce gambling-related harm.
With the new regime set to become fully operational, operators across the market are continuing preparations to meet the upcoming regulatory deadlines and compliance requirements.
