Seven Jaraguá Players Suspended in Match-Fixing Probe

Seven players from Sport Club Jaraguá have received 30-day suspensions while authorities investigate alleged match manipulation and betting irregularities linked to a Santa Catarina State Championship Serie B fixture in Brazil.

The investigation relates to the match played on 4 July between Jaraguá and Juventus de Jaraguá do Sul, which ended in an 8-1 victory for Juventus. The case was first reported by ge and is based on findings published by the Brazilian Football Integrity Unit (UIFB), an organisation linked to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Sportradar Identified Unusual Betting Patterns

As part of its investigation, the UIFB relied on an analysis conducted by sports integrity specialist Sportradar.

According to the report, Sportradar detected betting patterns it considered inconsistent with normal market behaviour. The company stated that it found what it described as "clear and compelling evidence" suggesting certain wagers may have been placed with prior knowledge of the outcome of the match or events within it.

The report indicated that betting activity strongly favoured a Jaraguá defeat by at least seven goals, while wagers also anticipated the match producing a minimum of eight goals.

Betting Markets Shifted During the Match

The investigation also highlighted unusual movements in the betting markets as the game progressed.

By the 37th minute of the first half, with Juventus already leading 4-0, betting activity increasingly focused on a Juventus victory by at least six goals.

Before halftime, market activity shifted again toward a winning margin of seven or more goals. Similar movements were observed in the total-goals market, where betting initially concentrated on at least seven goals before moving toward predictions of eight or more goals before the break.

According to Sportradar's findings, around 90% of single handicap bets backed Juventus to win by at least six goals, while approximately 92% of total-goals wagers predicted seven or more goals during the match.

Match Incidents Included in Investigation

The report also examined several incidents during the game that were considered relevant to the investigation.

Among them were a penalty awarded to Eduardo Vinicius Alves Pimentel in the 63rd minute, along with defensive errors involving Jonatas da Silva Santos, Jesse Alef Lima dos Santos and Bernardo Dagostin Bongiolo during the goals that extended the scoreline to 7-1 and eventually 8-1.

The UIFB further noted that Andrigo Borges Braga, Emerson Teofano da Costa and Wendel Silva Teixeira had previously appeared in other matches regarded as suspicious between 2022 and 2024 while playing for clubs in Rio Grande do Sul and Rio de Janeiro.

Case Referred to Sports Court

Following the complaint, authorities requested the preventive suspension of seven Sport Club Jaraguá players.

The matter will now be reviewed as a priority by the Santa Catarina Football Court of Sports Justice (TJD-SC). All seven players have been suspended from football-related activities for 30 days while disciplinary proceedings continue.

According to ge, the UIFB also forwarded a confidential report to the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Catarina and the Federal Police for further investigation.

Club Reaffirms Commitment to Integrity

After details of the investigation became public, Sport Club Jaraguá issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to ethical conduct and sporting integrity.

The club stated:

"Sport Club Jaraguá officially reaffirms its unconditional commitment to ethics, transparency and sports integrity, principles which guide all our actions both on and off the field."

The statement also confirmed that the club would cooperate fully with the relevant authorities if any irregularities are established.

It added:

"If there are any irregularities detected, the club will provide full cooperation to the competent authorities and governing bodies, taking all necessary actions to conduct the appropriate investigation of the facts, while respecting due process."

The club concluded by reiterating its position on match-fixing:

"Integrity is non-negotiable. Match-fixing has no place at Sport Club Jaraguá."
