River Cree Partners with GiG for Alberta iGaming Launch
River Cree Resort & Casino has entered into a technology partnership with Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) as it prepares to expand into Alberta’s regulated online gambling market. The agreement will support the launch of an online casino and sportsbook, linking the resort’s existing land-based business with a digital gaming operation.
Owned by the Enoch Cree Nation, River Cree is situated on the western outskirts of Edmonton. The property registered with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) earlier in 2026 to pursue an online gambling launch, although its digital platform has yet to go live.
GiG announced the deal this week, positioning its technology as a way to connect River Cree’s established customer base with online gaming services. The agreement also makes the resort the fifth operator in Alberta to partner with the technology provider.
GiG to Power River Cree’s Digital Platform
GiG will supply the technology infrastructure required for River Cree’s planned online casino and sports betting operations. The agreement covers a range of services and products, including:
Online casino games
Sports betting platform
Native mobile application
Tailored front-end development
Omnichannel technology
Data analytics and managed services
The omnichannel solution is designed to bring the resort’s physical and digital gaming activities together. GiG said the arrangement would draw on River Cree’s established presence in the local market, its existing players and its customer loyalty.
GiG CEO Richard Carter said the company’s turnkey platform, supported by its Data and Logic engines, enables established operators to integrate their land-based and online businesses.
He added that GiG’s technology and knowledge of the local market could help River Cree build on its existing position, establish its online presence and compete for a share of Alberta’s regulated iGaming market.
River Cree Expands Beyond Its Land-Based Casino
Opened in 2006, River Cree became Alberta’s first Indigenous-owned casino. Its planned online operation will extend the business beyond its existing physical venue.
CEO Vik Mahajan described the digital expansion as the next stage in making River Cree’s games available to players online. He said the resort had chosen GiG’s technology to develop its online offering.
Alberta’s regulatory framework permits existing land-based casinos, including commercially operated and First Nations-owned properties, to seek entry into the regulated online gambling sector. River Cree’s registration earlier this year marked a step towards participating in the market.
PURE Casino Offers a Comparable Market Entry
River Cree’s planned launch follows the entry of another Indigenous casino operator, PURE Casino Entertainment, which launched purecasino.ca in early August.
The platform uses technology supplied by Boyd Interactive, with Kambi providing its sports betting services.
PURE operates a larger portfolio of physical properties than River Cree. Its parent organisation, the First Nations coalition Indigenous Gaming Partners, owns seven casinos and several hotels across Alberta. Its holdings include four PURE-branded venues and properties such as Deerfoot Inn & Casino in Calgary.
PURE CEO Brad Belhouse has previously discussed with Canadian Gaming Business the potential advantages established land-based casino operators bring to the online sector.
Alberta’s regulated online gambling market opened on July 13 and has since grown to more than 50 casino and/or sportsbook websites operated by approximately 30 companies.
GiG Adds Another Alberta Operator to Its Network
The River Cree agreement expands GiG’s presence in Alberta, where its existing operator partners include Casino Time, LuckyDays and PowerPlay.
GiG already provides services to these operators in Ontario, where it has held a service provider licence since 2022. Those relationships contribute to the company’s wider Canadian operations as it develops its presence in Alberta.
With River Cree joining its partner network, GiG will support another land-based casino operator seeking to enter the province’s digital gambling market. Its responsibilities will include the online platform, mobile application, data services and omnichannel technology connecting the resort’s existing operations with its planned digital offering.
