Singapore Probes 11 Over Illegal Gambling Links
Singapore police are investigating 11 individuals, including several teenagers, for their alleged involvement in illegal online gambling activities and the misuse of bank accounts linked to gambling syndicates.
The suspects, aged between 17 and 23, were detained during a series of enforcement operations conducted from June 4 to June 11. The raids formed part of ongoing efforts to tackle unlawful online betting and related financial offences.
According to reports from The Straits Times, those arrested include nine men and two women. Authorities believe some of the individuals were involved in obtaining betting accounts from online gambling operators that are not licensed in Singapore, while others allegedly allowed their personal bank accounts to be used for transactions connected to illegal gambling networks.
Police highlighted that participating in such activities is a criminal offence and warned that involvement in illegal gambling operations can expose both individuals and their families to serious financial and social consequences.
Investigators suspect that three of the individuals helped acquire illegal betting accounts for other users. Seven others are believed to have surrendered control of their bank accounts to gambling syndicates after opening them. Another woman is accused of obtaining and attempting to source bank accounts for illegal purposes in exchange for payment.
Authorities said the arrests form part of a wider crackdown on illegal online gambling and the misuse of financial accounts. The case also underscores concerns about younger individuals becoming involved in gambling-related offences through account recruitment and financial facilitation activities.
Police reminded the public that acting as an agent for illegal gambling operations can carry penalties of up to S$200,000 in fines and a prison sentence of up to seven years. Individuals found gambling through unlicensed online operators may face fines of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to six months or both.
Authorities also encouraged members of the public to report illegal gambling activities and advised those experiencing gambling-related issues to seek support from the National Council on Problem Gambling.
