Spain Draw Triggers $1M Polymarket World Cup Loss

A high-profile loss on a prediction market has become one of the most talked-about betting stories of the FIFA World Cup after a trader lost nearly $1 million backing Spain to defeat Cape Verde.

Shortly before kickoff in Atlanta, a Polymarket user placed close to $1 million on Spain to win the match. As strong favourites, Spain offered only a relatively small return, with the position carrying a potential profit of just over $85,000.

However, the match finished in a surprising 0-0 draw, instantly wiping out the entire stake and turning what appeared to be a low-risk position into a seven-figure loss.

The wager quickly gained attention across social media, particularly because the trader had reportedly followed a strategy focused on backing heavily favoured outcomes rather than pursuing high-risk, long-odds opportunities.

While such an approach can generate consistent returns when favourites perform as expected, it also carries significant downside risk, as a single unexpected result can erase profits accumulated over multiple successful trades.

Spain’s stalemate with Cape Verde proved to be exactly that kind of setback.

Despite dominating possession and controlling much of the match, Spain failed to find a breakthrough. The team registered 27 shots compared to Cape Verde’s six and recorded seven efforts on target. Statistical models also favoured Spain heavily, assigning them an expected goals figure of 2.29, while Cape Verde generated just 0.3.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha played a key role in preserving the result, producing several important saves throughout the game. Spain also came close on multiple occasions, with Ferran Torres striking the crossbar during their search for a winning goal.

While the result proved costly for the Polymarket trader, it delivered a positive outcome for a bettor on rival prediction platform Kalshi. Reports indicate that another user placed more than $2.3 million on Cape Verde avoiding defeat against Spain. Since that position only required Spain not to win, the scoreless draw resulted in a profitable outcome.

The contrasting fortunes highlighted the growing visibility of prediction markets, where large wagers frequently attract attention and become viral talking points among sports and betting communities.

For the trader who backed Spain, the statistics, form and pre-match expectations all pointed toward a likely victory. Yet a single unexpected result transformed a seemingly secure position into one of the tournament’s most notable losses.
